Redox flow batteries

Electricity in a tank

Redox flow cells use chemically stored energy to generate electricity. In this regard they are similar to accumulators but with a decisive difference: in contrast to batteries, the electrochemical storage system and energy converter do not form an inseparable unit. Redox flow batteries store energy in electrolyte solutions by dissolved salts absorbing and releasing electrons on membranes. The tank volume for the electrolyte determines the energy content of the accumulator.

The storage system and energy converter form separate units.
