Flagship of the funding initiative

Batteries in the distribution grid

The projects range from batteries connected to photovoltaic systems in households to electricity storage facilities capable of storing megawatts of power which can be used by energy supply companies. Key research topics include electrical or electrochemical systems for storing electrical energy, such as batteries, redox flow or double-layer capacitors, and mechanical storage systems, such as compressed air storage, pumped storage power plants or flywheels. Other projects being funded include new storage concepts and research into connecting decentralized storage systems.

Analysis 1.2.2016

Standardising performance tests

Researchers from Fraunhofer UMSICHT are designing performance tests for battery storage systems. The tests are supposed to enable objective testing and comparison of different types of batteries for standardised and practical applications. Another goal is to apply these test cycles with a real lithium-ion battery and with a lead-gel or a redox flow battery for comparison. .

Accumulator 31.8.2015

Magnesium sulfide - an alternative to lithium

Batteries should demonstrate a high energy density, they should be inexpensive and should hold many memory cycles. Scientists develop such batteries in the project MASAK. They pursue a new concept: in contrast to the known magnesium - systems not magnesium cation are used for charge transfer, but sulfide anion. ... more

Redox flow batteries 8.10.2015

Increase efficiency with new materials

Scientists investigate new bipolar plates and sealing materials for components of the redox flow cell. The integration of various functions in one component will reduce costs and improve the reliability of the batteries. ... more

Redox flow battery 1.8.2016

Liquid storage simplifies network expansion

Scientists of the project SmartPowerFlow integrated a large redox-flow battery into the power grid of a German operator. They wanted to find out to what extent energy storages increase the capacity of the grid and so reduce the cost of grid expansion. ... more

Double layer capasitors 1.9.2016

Activated carbons increase energy density

Scientists develop new electrode materials for high-efficiency double layer capacitors within the project ActivCaps. In contrast to purely empirical investigations they will characterize the structur of the materials at the nanoscale and will adjust simulation algorithms to the materials. The developed simulation tools can then be used for development of materials. ... more

Power-heat systems 12.4.2017

Network storage with hybrid photovoltaic system

Researchers develop new strategies for the operation of hybrid photovoltaic systems in residential buildings and small businesses. For this purpose, the scientists optimize the operation management by simulations and laboratory measurements in the project INE-VES. The optimized operations management will increase the benefit of the system for the power grid, as well as for the owner. ... more

Energy storage flywheels 12.4.2017

Faster power storage with high cycle rate

Energy storage flywheels as short-term intermediate storage for regenerative energy generation systems can help keep the power grid stable. With good efficiency, they absorb or emit high power levels – while at the same time having an extremely durable cycle. In the ENERSPHERE project, scientists are working on a flywheel rotor with a superconducting bearing. This makes it extremely intrinsically safe and robust. .
