Modular 5-megawatt battery storage system
The world’s first modular battery storage system with a performance class of five megawatts is being built in Aachen. This shall use lithium-ion batteries for, for example, short-term power storage, high-temperature batteries across several hours and lead-acid batteries for short and medium discharge times. Construction of the large-scale storage system is scheduled to begin in autumn 2014.
In the “Modular, multi-megawatt, multi-technology, medium-voltage battery storage” project – known as M5BAT for short – the Eon Energy Research Centre at RWTH Aachen University is developing an innovative and modular large-scale battery storage system together with the Eon power supply company, the Exide and Beta Motion battery manufacturers and the SMA inverter company. It is planned that the modular, large-scale battery storage system will have a performance class of five megawatts. A special feature is the combination of different battery technologies. For example, lithium-ion batteries shall be used as a short-term power storage system, lead-acid batteries for short and medium discharge times and high-temperature batteries for the hourly ranges. The initial focus of the project is on integrating renewable energies, testing the provision of a decentralised balancing capacity for ensuring stable grid operation and power trading, and the associated use of electricity price differences.
For Eon, battery storage systems are particularly interesting because these are not dependent on geographical prerequisites or extended planning deadlines, as is the case with compressed air energy storage power plants and pumped storage power plants, for example. Construction of the large-scale storage system is scheduled to begin in autumn 2014 and commissioning in 2015. The plant operation, system integration and scientific monitoring of the project are being carried out by the Eon Energy Research Centre at RWTH Aachen University. The manufacturers Exide Technologies GmbH, beta-motion GmbH and SMA Solar Technology are supplying the technical components and are supervise their testing during operation. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is spending around 6.5 million euros on funding the M5BAT project.
