PEM electrolysis has been used until now in smaller appliances with capacities below 100 kW. It achieves a high power density and good cell efficiencies, responds to load changes within seconds, and also works in the small partial load range. This enables it to be easily combined with intermittent renewable energies. However, as a relatively new technology it is not as mature as alkaline electrolysis and incurs higher costs.

Electrolysis uses the inverse principle of fuel cells. With the help of electricity, water molecules (H2O) are split into their constituent parts: hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2).
