Synthesis 3.4.2017

Synthesising methane cost-effectively

In the Katmethan project scientists want to find new peptide-based catalysts for low-cost synthesis of methane. The chances of success are uncertain due to lack of data. The efficiency depends primarily on the achievable efficiency of the catalytic reaction, the catalyst cost per unit and the stability of the catalysts. ... more

Flywheel energy storage systems 12.4.2017

New design reduces system costs

Flywheel energy storage systems can play an important role in stabilising the electricity grid. When required, they provide high outputs within milliseconds. The short-term electricity storage systems also act as active voltage filters for optimising the electricity quality. In the KoREV-SMS project, scientists are developing a flywheel energy storage system with an external rotor design. This results in a higher energy density with lower acquisition costs compared to conventional flywheel energy storage systems. .

Stationary battery storage systems 8.11.2016

Cost-effective manufacture of lithium batteries

Compared with other electrochemical storage systems, lithium-ion batteries have high energy efficiencies, high energy densities and long service lives. They are therefore the first choice for many mobile applications. However, they are still not used very much as stationary storage systems and are comparatively expensive. It is intended that environmentally friendly and cost-effective production processes for the battery cells and storage systems shall change that. ... more

Power-to-Storage 3.5.2017

MeMO - a novel high-temperature battery

Forschungszentrum Jülich is developing a novel kind ot high-temperature battery. In this Power-to-Storage / Storage-to-Power concept, surplus electrical energy is stored by reduction of a metal oxide and regained by oxidation of the metal. The stacks have been operated for more than 200 redox cycles successfully. ... more

High-energy cathodes 18.10.2016

New Materials for lithium ion batteries

A research group working in the project KaLiPat to make materials for high-energy cathodes of lithium ion batteries more durable and cheaper. The project focus is the synthesis, modification and characterization of the materials. ... more

Electrochemical Storage 6.2.2015

Innovative Supercapacitors

Supercapacitors are becoming one of the most important electrochemical storage devoces. The IES project aim to develop innovatice supercapacitors having high energy and containing new and safe components, able to work in a broad range of temperatures. ... more

Stationary Energy Storage Systems 3.9.2015

Zinc-air batteries for the grid

Until now, zinc-air batteries have mostly been used as small disposable batteries, for example for hearing aids. The electrochemical reaction of zinc with atmospheric oxygen offers, however, considerable potential for building rechargeable storage systems with a high energy density for large energy volumes. Until now it has not been possible to implement it technically. In the “ZnPLUS” project, scientists want to utilise new concepts and components to develop an economic zinc-air energy storage system in the megawatt range. ... more

PEM elektrolysis 30.8.2016

Put stacks through their paces

Stacks with a capacity of one megawatt class have so far not been sufficiently investigated. In this project, scientists are developing a globally unique test center for PEM electrolysers. This stack may soon be studied for up to 1 MW connected load. ... more

Accumulator 31.8.2015

Magnesium sulfide - an alternative to lithium

Batteries should demonstrate a high energy density, they should be inexpensive and should hold many memory cycles. Scientists develop such batteries in the project MASAK. They pursue a new concept: in contrast to the known magnesium - systems not magnesium cation are used for charge transfer, but sulfide anion. ... more

Double layer capasitors 1.9.2016

Activated carbons increase energy density

Scientists develop new electrode materials for high-efficiency double layer capacitors within the project ActivCaps. In contrast to purely empirical investigations they will characterize the structur of the materials at the nanoscale and will adjust simulation algorithms to the materials. The developed simulation tools can then be used for development of materials. ... more
