Balancing inflexible electricity generation

In the “Multi-Grid Storage” research project, researchers are analysing measures for balancing out inflexible electricity generation by linking the electricity, gas and heating supplies. For instance, it is intended to develop the storage and balancing measures required in Germany, identify useful interactions and develop criteria for their systematic optimisation.

Because of its fluctuating nature, an energy supply that is based on renewable energy sources is more dependent on buffer capacity to accommodate excess electricity, which can be activated at times of electricity shortage. It is likely that the usage of renewable electricity can be more effective if the links between the three systems electricity network, gas network and heat supply can be utilised.
This research project therefore deals with the analysis of the required storage and balancing measures, the identification of interactions between the three systems electricity network, gas network and heat supply and the establishment of indications for their systematic optimisation.

Storage options and future supply situation

The research project "Multi-Grid-Storage" investigates different measures to balance inflexible electricity generation by linking the electricity- gas- and heat supply systems. First of all, individual measures and energy conversion chains have been  analysed and sensible combinations of different supply options have been assessed.
The second part is dealing with the analysis of different balancing and storage options. Expected results are conclusions about the conditions, under which the technologies can be operated economically and the capacity of electricity storage they can contribute.
In the third part the energy conversion chains are analysed with a view of future supply situation, which will be based on renewable energy. Expected results are the identification of required market mechanisms, the assessment of the impact the different energy conversion chains can have and what stimuli for the further development are required.
The project is a system analysis of the energy conversion chains described above. The project is executed by Fraunhofer IFAM Institute. The project cooperates with four more research projects dealing with other system analyses supported by the energy storage initiative.
