Sorption heat storage for the industry
In MoGeSoWa researchers developed an efficient, cost-effective modular
heat storage. The aim was, to increase the energy efficiency of combined
heat and power plants.

An increased efficiency in the usage of fossil as well as renewable energies is a main objective to achieve the European and global goal for reduction of green house gases and the protection of the climate. Heat storage systems play an important role in this context to store suplus and waste heat for a balancing of heat supply and demand, e.g. in combined heat and power systems. Sorption heat storage offers in principle many advantages in terms of heat storage density, minimised heat losses and possible temperatures.
Objective of the project is the development of an powerful, cost efficient and modular heat storage technology in a relevant quality and size capable to being used in the intended application in combined heat and power systems of different sizes. Therefore the economic area of application for the technology should also be extended to temperatures below 110°C by the systematic development of new composite materials.
Integrative approach and status of the project
Within the project an integrated approach of material, component and process development is combined with measures for an optimised construction in terms of the possibility for an later efficient production of the storage systems. The work is based on comprehensive pre-existing know-how, pre-tests and former projects. Special about the project is that four industrial project partner from different branches and complementary competences work together with four Fraunhofer institutes. Always one industry company and one Fraunhofer institute put a focus on one of the four main development tasks "material development and design", "manufacture and construction", "storage concept and system development" as well as "system control and energy management".
Following the first phase of a more detailed system definition and parameterisation intensive work is done at different system components and storage materials for the adsorption heat storage technology. The work follows a holistic approach with innovative concepts in the areas of process technolgy, construction, material and heat exchange. In the last year of the project the developed sub-systems and technical results will be transferred and integrated in a larger test storage for demonstration and test of the project results.
